Dragonspire Mountains

The Realm of Giants, Dragons, and Ancient Stone

The Dragonspire Mountains form the northern backbone of Kingsreach. Stretching hundreds of miles across the horizon, these towering peaks separate the civilized kingdoms from the untamed lands beyond. Snow crowns the highest summits throughout the year, while deep valleys conceal forgotten kingdoms, dragon lairs, giant strongholds, and ruins older than recorded history.

To most citizens of Kingsreach, the Dragonspire Mountains are a distant and dangerous frontier. To adventurers, they represent opportunity, mystery, and untold wealth.

Countless legends claim that more treasure lies hidden beneath these peaks than in all the vaults of Crownspire combined.

Many who seek such riches never return.

History

Long before the founding of Kingsreach, the Dragonspire Mountains were home to the Titan Lords, colossal beings said to have shaped the world itself. Ancient songs claim the Titans raised the mountains from the earth during a war against primordial forces that threatened creation.

When the Titans vanished, their descendants inherited the range.

The Giant-Kings established mighty stone kingdoms within the mountains. Vast roads were carved into cliffsides. Fortress-cities were built directly into mountain peaks. Great halls echoed with feasts, battles, and royal councils.

For thousands of years, giants ruled Dragonspire.

Then the dragons came.

Ancient dragons descended upon the mountains seeking power, treasure, and territory. Some allied with the giants. Others waged brutal wars against them. Entire kingdoms vanished beneath dragonfire and falling stone.

The scars of those ancient conflicts remain visible today.

Geography

The Dragonspire Mountains contain some of the most extreme terrain in Kingsreach.

Towering peaks rise above the clouds.

Glaciers carve through deep valleys.

Ancient roads wind along dangerous cliffs.

Avalanches, rockslides, and sudden storms are common.

Travelers often require experienced guides simply to survive the journey.

The region contains several major landmarks.

The Thunderpeaks

The highest mountains in Dragonspire.

These colossal peaks remain snow-covered throughout the year. Violent storms gather around their summits with little warning.

Many believe cloud giants still rule hidden citadels among the highest reaches.

Frostfang Ravine

A vast canyon of ice and stone.

Freezing winds howl through the ravine day and night. Legends speak of ancient white dragons sleeping beneath the glacier fields.

Many explorers have disappeared within its depths.

The Glacier of Teeth

A sprawling ice field covered with jagged formations resembling enormous fangs.

Ancient dragon bones occasionally emerge from the ice as glaciers slowly shift.

Treasure hunters frequently risk their lives searching these frozen remains.

The Shattered Wall

A massive cliff face stretching for miles.

Ancient stories claim the wall was created when a Titan struck the mountains with a hammer during a forgotten war.

The scar remains visible centuries later.

Karak-Dûn

At the heart of Dragonspire stands Karak-Dûn.

This enormous fortress-city serves as the seat of the Storm-Thane, ruler of the Giant-Kings.

Built atop a mountain summit, Karak-Dûn is among the largest structures in the known world.

Massive gates taller than castle towers protect its entrance.

Great halls contain stone pillars wider than entire houses.

The city is considered neutral ground where giants, dwarves, merchants, and diplomats occasionally meet under ancient treaties.

Visitors are expected to follow strict customs.

Breaking those customs rarely ends well.

The Giant-Kings

The Giant-Kings trace their lineage directly to the Titans.

Several giant clans inhabit Dragonspire.

Storm Giants

The most respected and powerful giant lineage.

Storm giants serve as rulers, judges, and guardians of ancient traditions.

Cloud Giants

Masters of diplomacy, trade, and magical knowledge.

Many reside within hidden mountain citadels.

Fire Giants

Builders, blacksmiths, and warriors.

Their strongholds are often located near volcanic regions.

Stone Giants

Keepers of history and lore.

They preserve ancient carvings and records throughout the mountains.

Hill Giants

The most numerous giant population.

They inhabit lower valleys and maintain settlements near major trade routes.

Though not always united, the giant clans generally cooperate against outside threats.

Dragons of Dragonspire

The mountains earned their name for good reason.

Dragons inhabit every corner of the range.

Some lairs are known.

Many remain undiscovered.

Several legendary dragons dominate local stories.

Vorthazul the White

A massive ancient white dragon believed to dwell beneath Frostfang Ravine.

His breath is said to freeze entire valleys.

Embermaw

An ancient red dragon whose lair lies somewhere within the volcanic regions surrounding Karak-Drog.

Many treasure hunters have sought his hoard.

None have returned with proof.

Aurelion the Bronze

One of the few dragons known to maintain peaceful relations with nearby settlements.

He occasionally aids travelers facing great threats.

Nightscale

A mysterious black dragon rumored to inhabit hidden caverns beneath the mountains.

Few eyewitnesses survive encounters with the creature.

Karak-Drog

Deep within the volcanic western mountains lies Karak-Drog.

This fortress serves as the primary stronghold of the Fire Giants.

Rivers of lava illuminate its walls.

Massive forges operate continuously, producing weapons, armor, and engineering marvels unmatched elsewhere in Kingsreach.

Many of the finest giant-crafted weapons originate here.

Stonehelm

Stonehelm stands upon a steep mountain ledge overlooking several major trade routes.

The settlement serves as an important meeting point between travelers, merchants, dwarves, and giant clans.

Adventurers often use Stonehelm as a base of operations before venturing deeper into the mountains.

Numerous guides, mercenaries, and explorers can be found within its taverns.

Creatures of Dragonspire

The mountains host a wide variety of dangerous creatures.

  • Dragons — Ancient and powerful predators that claim vast territories, hoard immense treasure, and inspire both fear and reverence throughout the mountains.
  • Wyverns — Winged reptilian hunters with venomous tails, often nesting on remote cliffs and preying upon livestock and travelers.
  • Griffons — Majestic creatures with the bodies of lions and the heads and wings of eagles, known for fiercely defending their nesting grounds.
  • Manticores — Cunning monsters with leonine bodies, bat-like wings, and deadly tail spikes capable of striking from a distance.

  • Trolls — Regenerating monsters that lurk in caves, forests, and mountain passes, feared for their resilience and ferocity.
  • Frost Wolves — Large white-furred wolves adapted to the frozen peaks, hunting in coordinated packs across the snowfields.
  • Ice Drakes — Lesser dragonkin that dwell among glaciers and frozen caverns, capable of unleashing blasts of freezing breath.
  • Cave Bears — Massive bears that inhabit mountain caves and secluded valleys, becoming especially dangerous when defending their territory.
  • Mountain Trolls — A hardier breed of troll adapted to rocky terrain, capable of scaling cliffs and surviving harsh alpine conditions.
  • Rock Elementals — Living beings of stone and earth that emerge from the mountains themselves, often guarding ancient sites or sacred places.
  • Gargoyles — Winged stone creatures that perch upon ruins and cliffs, remaining motionless until they strike unsuspecting prey.
  • Harpies — Cruel avian humanoids whose enchanting songs lure travelers toward deadly falls and hidden ambushes.
  • Giant Eagles — Intelligent and noble birds with enormous wingspans, sometimes serving as allies, scouts, or messengers for those who earn their trust.

Travelers must remain constantly vigilant.

Even seemingly peaceful valleys can conceal deadly threats.

The Lost Roads

One of Dragonspire's greatest mysteries involves the Lost Roads.

These enormous stone highways predate both giants and dragons.

Their builders remain unknown.

The roads connect ruins scattered throughout the mountains and often disappear directly into solid rock.

Some scholars believe the roads lead to forgotten Titan cities buried beneath the peaks.

Others suspect they connect to something far older.

Adventure Hooks

The Sleeping White Dragon

Strange earthquakes suggest Vorthazul may be awakening beneath Frostfang Ravine.

The Broken Treaty

A giant clan accuses a noble house of violating an ancient agreement.

War threatens to erupt.

The Lost Titan Forge

Explorers discover evidence of a legendary forge capable of creating magical artifacts.

The Missing Caravan

An entire merchant caravan disappears along the Giant's Causeway.

The Dragon Cult

A secret cult seeks to awaken an ancient dragon buried beneath the Glacier of Teeth.

The Storm-Thane's Challenge

The ruler of Karak-Dûn seeks champions to investigate mysterious activity in the deepest mountain tunnels.

The Dragonspire Mountains remain one of the last truly wild places in Kingsreach.

Here, ancient powers still walk the earth.

Giants rule from mountain thrones.

Dragons sleep atop unimaginable treasure.

Forgotten roads lead to lost kingdoms.

And every peak hides a story waiting to become legend.
